I picked up an MDC Climax shell for $1 at a swap meet awhile back.
To me, the boiler and area for fuel look to tall.
I saw a few that were modified by cutting down the frame and lowering the boiler and installing a smaller can motor so I thought I'd give it a try.

I borrowed the chassis from a box cab diesel I pieced together years ago.
The first photo shows the stock tall boiler.
The sides of the frame from the cab forward were milled to the level of the floor.

I cut the boiler off and removed 2 planks from the sides.
I also removed some of the planks from the front (not shown in the first photo). I plan to trim them and re install them later.
The second photo shows the lowered boiler set in place. It is also moved back into the cab so the smoke box isn't overhanging the pilot.

As always Ray, I'll be following your progress wirth great interest!
(I have one of those that I got from Sheriff Jim, a while back!)

I'm contemplating basing another type A in HOn30...I wasn't real happy with my first attempt...I'm hoping to do better next time around!

I know you will provide me with some much needed inspiration! Cool

(and you sure as heck can't beat that price for motive power! Laughing )

To move the boiler back, I had to mill notches in the frame.
I also milled notches to fit a CD ROM drive motor into the frame.

Thanks Matt.
These brass angles form the body mount tabs and a mounting point for the motor mount plate.

Very Happy Great work Ray. I'm still trying to learn electronics stuff. Now, does a hard drive unit have a motor like a CD Rom unit? I got some cd units but they are still good and don't want to buster up.

The motor mount plate was made from .030" brass plate and soldered to the brass angles.

The drive shaft is made up from one original MDC 4 prong coupling, and an Athearn 400022 coupling on the trucks. An Athearn 41017 slotted coupling fit with a pulley from an old VCR connects the two couplings on the trucks.
A neoprene belt stretched to provide light tension completes the drive.
If the belt is to tight it will lift the inner wheel sets off the track.

I cut down the sides of the fuel tender and installed a deck to stack wood on.
